UNCLOS: Compromis Between Malaysia & Vietnam

Dear All,

Malaysia & Vietnam have "compromis" to bring the dispute relating to the continental shelf to UNCLOS (United Nation Conference on Law of The Sea 1982). A little info's regarding UNCLOS. UNCLOS was open to signature on 1982 and it took 9 years to achieve its minimum 60 ractification from states all around the world (particularly referring to UN Members). It was enforced on 1992. UNCLOS have adopted 4 Geneva Convention which is:

1949 Convention on Territorial Sea and Contigeous Zone
1949 Convention on Continentel Shelf
1949 Convention on High Sea
1949 Convention on Fishing

Every coastal states have a maximum 350 nautical miles of continental shelf. Disputes occurs when there is an adjecent states where both states continental shelf overlap each others. Disputes usually will be forwarded to UNCLOS by mutual consent inorder to determine continental shelf limits of each states. The limit will be determined by the theory of "equidistance".
